Thyroid supplements with iodine and selenium, two trace minerals that contribute to normal thyroid function.
Thyroid supplements
Thyroid supplements usually focus on two trace minerals, iodine and selenium. Your thyroid is a small gland in the neck that makes hormones involved in many everyday processes, and both minerals play a part. Iodine contributes to the normal production of thyroid hormones and normal thyroid function. Selenium also contributes to normal thyroid function.
Iodine comes mainly from fish, seafood, eggs and dairy, so people who eat little of these foods, including many vegans, sometimes look at supplements.

Thyroid supplement FAQs
Can I take iodine if I have a thyroid condition?
If you have a diagnosed thyroid condition or take thyroid medication, speak to your GP before taking iodine or selenium. Both can affect thyroid function and may interact with your treatment.
How much iodine do I need?
The NHS says most adults need 140 micrograms of iodine a day, and that most people can get this from a varied diet. Taking high doses for a long time can affect how your thyroid works, so stick to the amount on the label and check with your GP or pharmacist before you start.
What foods contain iodine and selenium?
Good sources of iodine include white fish, shellfish, eggs and dairy. Selenium is found in Brazil nuts, fish, meat and eggs.
